When the last living thing
has died on account of us,
how poetical it would be
if Earth could say,
in a voice floating up
perhaps
from the floor
of the Grand Canyon,
It is done.
People did not like it here

He might be saying that we, humans, are going to be the cause of our downfall. That the planet is not going to have a say in how it happens, just that one day we're all going to be gone with no explenation.

I believe that Kurt Vonnegut is saying that people don't appreciate what the world has to offer and that humans are ungrateful for what nature gives them.. well.. naturally. It seems to me like the Earth is looking at humanity as its progeny [oh oh :p] and it is crushed and disappointed. Earth knew all along that we would one day end all life, human or not. I agree with what Vonnegut says because nowadays most of us concern ourselves with material things and I think we have lost touch and communication with the 'real' world, which was not how it is today. It's a pretty bleak view, but it's hard to disagree with... this is dulce..
