The Joy Luck Club, Question 2

This round is a two-part question: you should first respond to the quote I've supplied by sharing your opinions and questions about the passage. Then answer the questions I've posed below.

Respond to the last five paragraphs at the end of the chapter titled Scar.

In Chinese culture, ancestors are shown great respect and often believed to be watching those left behind. What evidence have you already seen of this connection across the generations? What kidn of relationship can there be with a family member who died before you were even born? Think also of the generations who will come after you - do they owe you anything? How do you feel about the belief that these things are vitally important?

Scar means there is and open wound its when a loved one has past away and when the wound heals its when you have already not forgot them but have over come the death of our loved one.

Well in my Mexican culture we show grate respesct twards our ancestors and the ones that have past away there is El Dia De Los Muertsos The day of the dead. Thats not the only day we pay respect to our loves ones or ancestors that have past away every day we remmember them i mean in my family and when when i do not know about my ancestors i ask my mom or dad about then and what were they like even if i never got so see them or never meet i still pay grate respect twards them. In the generations to come when i have my own children i will teach them & show them our culture like my mom and dad tought and showd me no matter what it was like i love my culture and religion.

I thought the last five paragraphs were intense. It takes a lot of strength to cut off some of your own flesh. It made me wonder if I would do it to save my own mothers life.I think that if it was what I believed in then I would knowing it would be the last resort.

You can see how strong mother hood is in this book. The mothers, grandmothers, and daughter all share a bond with each other. You could have a genetic realationship with your family that has past.I was told when I was younger I looked like my grandmother when she was little. Those little traits are often passed down.I feel that the generations after me just owe me respect and not spoil the family name.I think respect is the most cherished things of a family.I think that respect of your families name is important and respect for your ancestors yet to try to make a magic medicine to help someone live is too much. When it's their time it's their time.Let them rest in peace.

The last five paragraphs are strong and they made me cry and feel the pain that An-mei was feeling when she was watching her mother do what she was doing. Just know that thats what the Chinese do this so that it show honor to their mother and just to know that they do this in tradition makes me fell that we as Americans should be more sympathetic.
well just the fact that they do things that have been done in tradition shows that the connection between the generation. I think that if i had a family member die before i was born that there wouldn't be a relationship between me and the person that died but yet there are culture that believe that the dead member well give their soul to the one that is being born. the generation that come after me i hope that they will contiune with the traditions that have been in the family for years.

In my family we hardly speak about does that are died unless they were very important in there modern days. A tradition we do have is to visit them the day they passed away and make a ceremony. After wards have a meal with the whole family and the next day we all go back to our normal lives with out mentioning the family member who died. If someone related to me died before I was born I wouldn’t feel like I have a relationship with them. There could possibly be a connection with that person if you follow that persons foot prints in what they did and that way you could understand what they went through and all the sacrifices he/she did to get there.

Magical soup from a piece of flesh? The last few paragraphs of scar can really disturb normal people. This idea of creating a life potion shows the powerful bond mother/daughter relationships are in the chinese culture. Even after being shunned from the family the mother still had the love to cut herself. It is evident that family in the chinese culture comes first before everything else. Thats why when a chinese family member gets shunned they lose everything and will be forgotten even after death. This is why everyone in the family must be obidient and have shou among the family and others.

The meaning of life is happiness. My ancestors owe me nothing the only connections my dead relatives may have in common with I is live life the way it makes us happy. The way I see things with family its hard grow up with out them but its easy to live without them. The past is not the most important thing in life its growing up and learning how to live life without your parents when the time comes.

WELL I THINK THAT A SACR IS FOR EVER SORT OF LIKE FAMILY YOU MAY NOT LIKE THEM BUT THEY ARE STILL THERE AND YOU CANT GET RID OF THEM AS MUCH AS YOU TRY.IN MY OPINION I THINK THAT WE ARE CONNECTED TO OUR ANCESTORS, SOMETIMES IT CAN BE IN A GOOD WAY AND SOMETIMES IT CAN BE IN A BAD WAY BEACAUSE WE CAN CARRY THE REPUTATION OF OUR PAST ANCESTORS EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE DEAD WE ARE STILL CONNECTED BECAUSE OF WHAT THEY HAVE LEFT BEHIND FOR US. BUT WE HAVE TO HONOR THEM AND GIVE THEM RESPECT AND I THINK THAT GOES FOR ANY CULTURE. AND I WOULD LIKE TO BE REMEMBERED EVEN AFTER MY DEATH BY MY FAMILY AND I THINK THATS EVERYONES DREAM TO LEAVE A LEGACY FOR YOUR FAMILY TO REMEMBER AND CHERISH.
