The Namesake, Question 3

Notice that this novel is written in the present tense, which is not the way the majority of novels are composed. Instead of writing,

"Gogol returned to high school...he took his turn at the podium and recited the speech from Macbeth."

Lahiri writes it this way instead:

"Gogol returns to high school...he takes his turn at the podium and recites the speech from Macbeth."

What is the effect of Lahiri's writing that the novel is written this way? It's unusual, so why does she choose to do it? Pick two quotes from between pages 75-150 that support your assertion. Try not to pick quotes that other people have already used in their responses.

I think that she writes in this way because she is not telling just a story she is talking to her readers. for example when i talk to my friends or just anyone im comfortable talking to i hardly use past tense. a quote from the book that shows that is "his father is still standing there in his room, watching expectantly..."(75) its kind of showing the readers like Look this is whats happening. another quote is "they walk together down the staircase." (95) againthe autor seems to me as if she is talking to use instead of telling us a story.

in my view i feel that Lahiri writes this novel in this way becuase she wants to show the reader that this is not only a book, but the in dept detail of the tone. in almost evey paragraph there is an really great detail of the setting of the novel, it makes it seem that your almost there.(98)"he wonders how many times he has written his old name, at the tops of how many tests and quizzes, how many homework assignments......how many times does a person write his name in a lifetime-a million? Two million."
this gets the reader involved with what the author is really getting at, the point in other words.
(102)"He wonders if this how it feels for an odese person to become thin, for a prisoner to walk free." Again Lahiri ties the reader into the story by showing the thoughts of the characters

What i see is that she is not just telling the story, she is showing us how the scenes come alive like a picture book.on page 75 Lahiri wrote,"Gogol Ganguli wears a Harvard sweatshirt and gray Levi's cordurotoys."That just gives us a mental image of how he was dressed at that certain scene. And in page 107 "At home he watches MTV with Soniaas she doctors her jeans, cutting inches off the bottom and anserting zippers at the newly narrowed ankles." The way the auther wrote the scene was to show us at it was actually hapening.
