Angela's Ashes, Question 2

This round is a two-part question: you should first respond to the quote I've supplied by sharing your opinions and questions about the passage. Then answer the questions I've posed below.

Comment on the quote on page 51:
"Your Pop. That means she's in a good mood. If she says your father it means she's in a bad mood."

Compare the McCourts' arrival in Ireland to the Joads' arrival in California. Discuss the generosity (or lack) of the communit already there.

ok well i think that "your, pop." to him means that his mom is satesfi with her dad's duties as a father. but when she is saying "father" she is disappointed on the person she has as a husband;to me he is a smart boy that know when to ask for mom or dad as they are mad at each other, he is growing faster then a normal boy his age.

the Mccourts' arrival in Ireland is sort of the same, sort of not to the Joads' family. the Macuorts' have their family there and they payed there way to Ireland , after they ran of frankis' family of telling his father,"he needs a job" and going of with out any money in their pockets or a pleas to sleep in. the Joads' stuck as a family and do not leave any one bejined. they had money as they leave and had each others for support in their journey to California. something i could say is the same would be that both are looking for jobs in orther to have something to eat. ammmmmmmmmmmmm i' liking the book a lot all ready in the 5th chapter...=)

This quote was a little confusing for me because, "Pop" and "father" mean the same thing to me, but in this case, she has different definitions for them. "Your Pop. That means she's in a good mood." This shows to me that she thinks he has a good roll as a father. I cant quiet explain the second part of the quote because I'm a little confused about it =/. The arrival of the McCourts' in Ireland and the arrival of the Joads in California, were very different in the communication of the families. In the Joads family, everyone is trying to work together to support everyone in the family. However, in the McCourts' family, it seems like all the pressure is put on the father. The family wants him to get a job to support the whole family all by himself.

Father is a sign of respect and when they are in a bad mood respect is everything. and pop is a sign of loving.
The Mccourts family wasn't as much as a hardship as the joad because they had to deal with discrimination and family problems. thats how they are different.

The moms referral to father instead of pops tells us that the form of respect is lowered by being mad. That is like most american families. We get mad and people can tell by the form of language we use.
The Mccourts' decided to go back and the Joad's were forced to leave. Mscourts' have family there that is waiting for them and they already have some sort of life there. Sure they had money problems but they always had help from someone.

"Pop" symbolizes a friendly relationship with one another while "father" usually is refered to when it is strictly said to do something or not in a good mood.

The Joads' family seems to be more caring and welcoming than the McCourts'. The Joads stuck together and helped one another out. While the McCourts family welcomed them to their home but then were telling them to get out the house. Sent them off to go find work somewhere else.

well i understood this quote in the following manner that pop and father honetly mean the same thing.. in the enghlish language.. and yes we can see ein the book that pop.. if someone says pop they are usually in a good mood...its just a term that they use to relfect good emotions.. but when she used father..the correct term.. meaning that she is mad or just not in a good mood... pop can be like a sweet name or a sign of loving someone...father is just straight up respectful manner.

they way i seen the differences was that the joad family had many hardship and many hard things to go through.. yeah they made it but with many hardships.. not like the mccourts arrival.. also the joads where forced to leave because of the cnditions and the mccourts decided to go.

This quote brought my attention in many differennt ways. When we referred to a father as "Pop" it brings out a more friendly sweet, loving and good mood person in this case a father. But interms of saying father, is gives out a more respectful manner, applying all the things that a father does, being strict..etc.

The arrival of the McCourts' in Ireland was more of a decison they decide to do. As we see in chapter two, the family has someone to look forward to and get help from. Even though they are set apart. Meanwhile the Joads' family were forced to leave their land due to neccessaties. They went through so many difficult situations and were mistreated differently because of who the were. We see more unity in the Joads because they work together as a family and support each other.

your pop refers to more of a casual name that is alot more personal than refering to someone as your father which is alot more propper and impersonal. It reflects moms good mood and how comfortable she is with the kids father at the time or not.

The MCcourts were not as welcomed as the joads. Some people in california were actually comfortable with the joads. There was more of a family aspect in the sense that people had to be more together and to survive they had to get together. In comparison to the Mccourts who were outcasted in the Irish environment because of their mixed blood.

the quote on page 51 just shows us how the characters feel at the time. to me it wasn't clear at all because i kept believing that when she said "Your pop" i kept assuming that she was talking about her dad but she is describing her emotions. McCourts arrival to Ireland isn't the same as the arrival of Joad's family. McCourts arrival was significant because he had already experienced life in Ireland, but the Joads were going to a new land where the had never been and were up for a new experience. The Joads went on their journey in order to better the situation that they were in. The Mccourts went in order to continue their lives but as the soon found out it wasn't all that better for them at all.
